چکیده

In this paper we present a new class of complexity measures, induced by a new data structure for representing k-valued functions (operations), called minor decision diagram. The results are presented in terms of MultiValued Logic circuits (MVL-circuits), ordered decision diagrams, formulas and minor decomposition trees. When assigning values to some variables in a function f the resulting function is a subfunction of f , and when identifying some variables the resulting function is a minor of f . A set M of essential variables in f is separable if there is a subfunction of f , whose set of essential variables is M . The essential arity gap gap(f) of the function f is the minimum number of essential variables in f which become fictive when identifying distinct essential variables in f . We prove that, if a function f has non-trivial arity gap (gap(f) > 2), then all sets of essential variables in f are separable. We define equivalence relations which classify the functions of k-valued logic into classes with the same minor complexities. These relations induce transformation groups which are compared with the subgroups of the restricted affine group (RAG) and the groups determined by the equivalence relations with respect to the subfunctions, implementations and separable sets in functions. These methods provide a detailed classification of n-ary k-valued functions for small values of n and k.

State Complexity of Prefix-Free Regular Languages

We investigate the state complexities of basic operations for prefix-free regular languages. The state complexity of an operation for regular languages is the number of states that are necessary and sufficient in the worst-case for the minimal deterministic finite-state automaton (DFA) that accepts the language obtained from the operation. We know that a regular language is prefix-free if and o...

Incomplete Transition Complexity of Basic Operations on Finite Languages

The state complexity of basic operations on finite languages (considering complete DFAs) has been extensively studied in the literature. In this paper we study the incomplete (deterministic) state and transition complexity on finite languages of boolean operations, concatenation, star, and reversal. For all operations we give tight upper bounds for both descriptional measures. We correct the pu...

A Survey on Operational State Complexity

Descriptional complexity is the study of the conciseness of the various models representing formal languages. The state complexity of a regular language is the size, measured by the number of states of the smallest, either deterministic or nondeterministic, finite automaton that recognises it. Operational state complexity is the study of the state complexity of operations over languages. In thi...

State Complexity of Basic Operations on Non-returning Regular Languages

We consider the state complexity of basic operations on non-returning regular languages. For a non-returning minimal DFA, the start state does not have any in-transitions. We establish the precise state complexity of four Boolean operations (union, intersection, difference, symmetric difference), catenation, reverse, and Kleene-star for non-returning regular languages. Our results are usually s...
